. . . that North Carolina is a “Metes and Bounds” state?  Because North Carolina was one of the original 13 British colonies, British Common law ruled the earliest land transactions carried out here.  Following the American Revolutionary War, the Public Lands Survey System was adopted for the methodic survey and disposal of the public lands of the United States.  In this system, the land was divided into “square”  ranges, sections, and townships for the ease of describing the property to be conveyed.  This was predominantly used in the West, and never fully implemented in North Carolina, where land boundaries are still commonly formed by natural features like ridgelines, creeks and roads.
